Riyadh : The Saudi Arabian government has tightened visa rules for foreign workers. Verification of educational and professional qualifications has become mandatory for Indians going to work in Saudi Arabia.

This rule was proposed by the Saudi government six months ago, which is being implemented from this week (January 14). This can have a direct impact on Indians going to work there. The number of Indians working in Saudi may also decrease due to this, because there are very few training centers to ensure quality control.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, Indians are the second largest expatriate community in Saudi Arabia after Bangladesh. Last year i.e. in 2024, more than 24 lakh Indians were living in Saudi Arabia. Of these, 16.4 lakh are engaged in the private sector and 7.85 lakh in domestic work. Indian workers play an important role in the labor market of Saudi Arabia and send money to India. The number of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Saudi is 26.9 lakh.

Saudi is changing its policies

The Saudi Arabian government is working on ‘Vision 2030’ under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi government is focusing on providing more employment to its citizens. In such a situation, changes are being made in the Saudi labor sector, which includes strict certification requirements for jobs. In the new rules, all applicants will have to get their educational qualifications verified.

Company owners and HR departments in Saudi are being asked to verify the certificates and information of expatriate employees. This initiative is expected to streamline the recruitment process and increase the quality of the workforce in Saudi Arabia. The circular issued by the Saudi mission in India states that professional verification will become one of the mandatory requirements for issuing work visas from January 14.

New rules will create problems

Saudi’s new rules are likely to cause many problems. There is a widespread complaint that there are not enough testing centers where applicants can get their verification done. Rajya Sabha member Haris Beeran says that testing centers for car drivers are located in Ajmer and Sikar in Rajasthan. Applicants, especially from the south, are forced to travel long distances to these places, causing them to face linguistic and logistical problems.
