The scorching heat has once again started showing its effect in North, Central and West India. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heatwave and sharp rise in temperature in seven states and union territories including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra for the next five days.
It is estimated that during this period the maximum temperature may remain 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, due to which people may have to bear the intensity of heat both during day and night. Due to hot winds and dry weather, especially children, elderly and sick people have been advised to remain cautious.
Relief is expected from April 16, when a western disturbance is expected to become active, causing rain and strong winds at some places in northwest India.
Heat wave in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat
According to IMD, heat may remain at its peak in Rajasthan till April 19. Heat wave is likely to prevail in eastern Rajasthan from April 15 to 19 and in western Rajasthan from April 16 to 18. Punjab, Haryana and western Madhya Pradesh may also be affected by heat wave during April 16 to 18. Gujarat is likely to experience intense heat from April 15 to 17 and Kerala-Mahe is likely to experience hot and humid weather on April 15. In some areas, extreme heat may be felt even at night.
Weather will change in Central India and Maharashtra
Strong winds with thunderstorms may occur in the plains of Central India and Maharashtra, whose speed can be up to 40 to 50 km per hour. Temperatures may increase by 2-3 degrees in the interior parts of Maharashtra, while similar patterns of rising and then falling temperatures will continue in Gujarat as well.
Rain and hail in the east and north-east
Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Jharkhand and Bihar are likely to receive heavy rains and hailstorms till April 18. Strong winds along with thunder and lightning may also occur in these states.
Light to moderate rain in South India
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana and interior Karnataka are likely to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning for the next 5 days.
Relief may be available from 19 April
The IMD forecasts that temperatures will continue to rise until April 18, but temperatures may drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in northwest India on April 19 and 20. Temperatures in central India will rise by 2-4 degrees between April 15 and 18, which may then drop again.
Western disturbance causes hailstorm in hilly states
Western disturbance will be active from 16th April, the intensity of which will be highest on 18th and 19th April. Due to its effect, there is a possibility of heavy rain and hailstorm in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Three cyclonic circulations active simultaneously
Three cyclonic circulations are active simultaneously over southeast Madhya Pradesh, Bangladesh and the Gulf of Mannar. One of these circulations is extending from Telangana to west Rajasthan via southeast Madhya Pradesh, causing weather changes in many states.
Weather changed in Kolkata and Bengal too
Many parts of West Bengal including Kolkata are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and strong storms till April 15. The Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts in some districts. The maximum temperature here is expected to reach 36 degrees, due to which the effect of both humidity and heat is being felt.
