Indian Railways is the most popular mode of transport. More than two crore people travel by trains every day. Many of these people are also accompanied by children. Railways have made some rules regarding the fare of children. According to the age, some children do not have to pay train tickets and some have to pay half the ticket. To avoid inconvenience and fines, every rail passenger should be aware of the rules related to railway children’s tickets.

Indian Railways provides free travel facility to children below the age of five years. This facility is available in both general and reserved coaches. But the thing to note here is that children do not get separate berths. If a parent wants a berth for his child below 5 years of age, then he will have to pay the full fare.

They will be charged half fare

A child between the age of 5 and 12 years is charged half ticket in the train. This means you will have to pay only half the fare. If you ask for a seat for your child while making the reservation, you will have to pay the full fare.

If a seat is not asked for, then half fare will be charged. It is worth noting here that in Chair Car, Executive Class, Second Class Seating and Executive Class AC categories, there is no NSOB option (No Seat Option) for the child. This means you will have to buy a full ticket for the child to travel in these categories as well.

A 12-year-old child will be charged a full ticket

For a child who is 12 years or older, you will have to issue a full ticket. The half ticket rule is only for children between 5 and 12 years of age.

Documents will have to be shown

If you want to take advantage of this rule of the railways, then while booking tickets for children, you will have to provide their birth certificate and other identity documents. These documents are asked so that the actual age of the child can be known, and people do not misuse this rule by hiding the age of the child. If your child is 5 or more years old and you travel with him in the train without taking his ticket, then you will have to pay a fine if caught.
