Punjab and protests have become common these days. In this episode, once again the farmers of Punjab protested at different places on Monday. Apart from this, the roads were also blocked. Due to this, people had to face a lot of problems in commuting in many areas. Not only this, people had also organized a bandh.

Farmers staged a sit-in protest at the Dhareri Jattan toll plaza. This caused delays on the Patiala-Chandigarh highway. After the demands of the farmers were not met, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had called for a protest. The farmers of Punjab took out a rally with strong support from the people. Traffic was blocked continuously from 7 am to 4 pm.

Impact on everyday things

This disrupted rail and road traffic. This affected the supply of essential commodities like milk and vegetables. Emergency services were exempted from the protest. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher urged people’s support. The Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) announced a temporary suspension of bus services from 10 am to 2 pm in line with the decision of the PRTC Punbus Employees Union. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said on Sunday that the shutdown will be total. The Indian Railways has cancelled more than 200 trains running on different routes across Punjab, including Vande Bharat and Shatabdi services.

Farmers are protesting in Punjab for several demands. Their main demands are as follows:

  • Legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops.
  • Loan waiver for farmers.
  • Pension for farmers and farm labourers.
  • There will be no increase in electricity rates.
  • Withdrawal of police cases.
  • Justice for the victims of 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
  • Restoring the Land Acquisition Act, 2013.
  • To provide compensation to the families of farmers killed during the previous agitation in 2020-21.
