Vande Bharat Sleeper variant: For better connectivity in the states, Indian Railways is preparing to introduce the sleeper variant of Vande Bharat train. The project is also expected to accelerate important rail connectivity projects in Kashmir within the first 100 days of the new government’s tenure, officials said.
Railways will start its scheme immediately after the new government takes charge. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, a subsidiary of Indian Railways, is finalizing the sleeper coaches of Vande Bharat trains.
Unlike chair trains, these (sleeper variants) have been designed for long distance overnight journeys, which will provide better comfort to the passengers. On the other hand, the 100-day plan also includes completing the procurement process of other equipment by August 2026, which is necessary to start the trial run of the bullet train.
Work going on 200 sleeper variants
Under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, work is in progress on 200 sleeper variant Vande Bharat trains with an aim to cater to different passenger needs and preferences. Currently running Vande Bharat trains have chair seating, limiting their use to daytime and short routes that cover a few hours. For longer journeys, it is necessary to have the facility of lay down.
Plan ready for Kashmir
Apart from providing comfort and convenience to passengers, railway officials are focusing on increasing connectivity in the Kashmir region. An important project in this regard is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which will integrate Kashmir with the national rail network.
While travel to Katra in Jammu is possible through Indian Railways, it is important to extend the journey to Srinagar by train. With an estimated cost of Rs 37,012 crore, the USBRL initiative aims to bridge this connectivity gap, thereby facilitating seamless travel across the region.
