It is mandatory to link PAN-Aadhaar before 31 March 2023. According to the notification of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), after April 1, if there is no PAN-Aadhaar link, it will be cancelled.

It can be linked till March 31 with a fine of Rs 1000. The PAN card will be made inoperative if it is not linked by the stipulated deadline. Last year CBDT changed the rules. After the changed rules, there is an exemption to link with fine till 31st March. After this the PAN card will be declared cancelled. If you have linked your PAN-Aadhaar, then check its status.

After March 31, those who did not link their PAN with Aadhaar number, their PAN card will be inoperative. According to the Income Tax Department, making 2 PAN cards in one name is also illegal. In such a situation, if there are two PAN cards, then the deadline to return it is also 31 March. According to section 272B of the Income Tax Act 1961, its use is prohibited if the PAN card is not linked. If used, a fine of Rs 10,000 can be imposed. Along with this, there is also a provision of punishment.

Check whether PAN-Aadhaar is linked or not

You can find out whether your PAN card is active or not sitting at home. To check this, you can see the status from the website of the Income Tax Department.

Step-1: Go to the Income Tax Department’s website incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Here on the left hand side several calls are given from top to bottom.

Step-2: There is an option of Know your PAN. After clicking here a window will open. In this, surname, name, states, gender, date of birth and registered mobile number have to be entered.

Step-3: After filling the details another new window will open. You will be sent an OTP on your registered. OTP has to be submitted. After this, your PAN number, name, citizen, ward number and remark will appear in front of you. It will be written in the remark whether your PAN card is active or not.

You can also check the status of linking through SMS.

Step 1: Type UIDPAN < 12 digit Aadhaar number> < 10 digit Permanent Account Number> in the message box.

Step 2: Send the message to 567678 or 56161.

Step 3: Wait for the message to be received from the server.

If you have PAN-Aadhaar link then this message will appear on the screen- “Aadhaar…is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.” 

If there is no PAN-Aadhaar link then this message will appear – “Aadhaar…is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database.”
