Weather Update- Many parts of the country are experiencing extreme cold (cold wave alert). There is snowfall on the mountains, the effect of which is being seen in Punjab, Haryana and the country’s capital Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued an alert for heavy rain and cold wave in various parts of the country. The IMD said that a low pressure area has formed in the Gulf of Mannar and surrounding areas.

IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on December 13. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in these areas on December 14, 16 and 17. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kerala and Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on December 13. A heavy rainfall warning has also been issued for South Interior Karnataka on December 13. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on December 13 and 14.

Cold wave in Delhi

With the increase in cold in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, a cold wave has also started. IMD has issued a yellow alert till Saturday. According to IMD, cold wave conditions will continue in Delhi and the minimum temperature at Delhi’s base weather station Safdarjung will remain around 4 degrees Celsius. The agency said that the temperature at other stations may drop by one or two degrees. On Wednesday, Delhi’s temperature fell below 5 degrees Celsius for the first time this season to 4.9 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest drop since 1987.

According to Skymet Weather, light rain and snowfall may occur in Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rain is likely in Tamil Nadu. Light to moderate rain may occur in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka. Light rain may occur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Cold wave conditions may develop in some parts of Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan. Cold wave is likely in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh.
