Gold Categories- 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K
- If gold jewellery has a 22K916 stamp it means that the gold item you are buying contains 91.6% gold and 8.4% other metals.
- If gold jewellery has an 18K750 stamp it means that the gold item you are buying contains 75% gold and 25% other metals.
- If gold jewellery has a 14K585 stamp it means that the gold item you are buying contains 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals.
Note , in India gold jewellery is not made from pure gold i.e. 24 carat gold, because this gold is too light to be used in making jewellery. Jewellery can be made only if there are other metals in this gold. |
24K and 22K gold is not used in diamond jewellery because 24K and 22K gold is lighter than diamonds. Therefore, 18K and 14K gold is used for diamond jewellery. |
6 digit alphanumeric code
While buying gold jewellery, you have to look for the third sign on the gold item, a 6-digit code. This code is called Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID). This code is different and unique for every jewellery piece. This alphanumeric code can also be verified on the BIS Care App.
Please note, it is not mandatory to enter 6 digit alphanumeric code on the bill.
