The Tamil Nadu government has made an important announcement on Monday, September 9, 2024. The state government has declared a public holiday on September 17 instead of September 16 on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi.

The decision has been taken under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

Holiday on September 17

The government order issued by Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam clarifies that the public holiday declared on September 17 will apply to all government undertakings, corporations and boards in Tamil Nadu. The order has been issued keeping in mind the administrative structure of the state, so that there is no hindrance in all government work.

Change in original announcement

Earlier, a government order issued on November 9, 2023 declared a public holiday on September 16 on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi. However, this decision was recently revised based on a communication sent by the Chief Qazi to the Tamil Nadu government. The communication said that the moon was not sighted on September 4, due to which Milad-un-Nabi will be celebrated on September 17.

As per Islamic calendar…

Milad-un-Nabi is the day to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Mohammed as per Islamic calendar. The day is celebrated with religious fervour and reverence across the country. This decision of the Tamil Nadu government ensures that all government offices and institutions will remain closed on this important occasion, giving people enough time to attend their religious events and family functions.
