Public holiday cancelled: This State govt has cancelled the pre-announced public holiday on 16 Sep 2024

The Reserve Bank of India said it has shifted the Eid-e-Milad holiday to Wednesday, September 18 instead of Monday, September 16 following a similar announcement by the Maharashtra government.

The Maharashtra government has rescheduled the Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai district from September 16 to September 18. The decision was taken to avoid a possible clash with the last day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 17. The local Muslim community proposed this change so that both festivals could be celebrated without any problems.

The Khilafat House, which represents the Muslim community in Byculla, had made the proposal, which was accepted by the state authorities. Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan had written to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde requesting that September 18 be declared an official holiday instead of September 16, so that both communities can celebrate their respective festivals with peace and gaiety.

“Accordingly, the Public Holiday declared on September 16, 2024 (Monday) is cancelled and the offices of the Reserve Bank of India situated in the districts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban shall remain closed on September 18, 2024 (Wednesday),” according to the RBI notification on September 14.

Eid-e-Milad, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is usually celebrated on September 16, but this time, the Muslim community has postponed its procession to September 18, giving priority to communal harmony. A similar step was taken last year as well.

As part of this change, the Eid-e-Milad procession from Turbhe to Ghansoli Dargah in Navi Mumbai will also be held on September 18. Keeping in mind crowd control during Ganpati immersion, the Central Railway has announced 22 additional suburban train services from September 14 to 18 to facilitate the travel of devotees participating in the festivals.
