Order of Special Revenue Commissioner

This stringent penalty structure is being seen as part of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s efforts to collect outstanding taxes for the 2024-25 fiscal year. According to reports, Special Commissioner of Revenue Munish Moudgil has directed zonal officers to take immediate action to recover dues before the penalty comes into effect. So far, the BBMP has collected Rs 4,604 crore, which is 88.4 per cent of the target. However, many properties still have dues, with Mahadevapura, East and South zones having the highest number of defaulters.

The government made changes in the Act

Moreover, the Karnataka government recently amended the BBMP Act, reducing the penalty on the outstanding amount from double to equal amount, with a penalty of Rs 100 for a year. However, this temporary relief is ending on March 31, leading to a sense of urgency among property owners to get the tax recovered immediately.

People are being urged

The BBMP has already started taking strict measures, including seizing and auctioning properties, to recover outstanding taxes. As the deadline approaches, the local body is urging residents to pay their dues on time to avoid accumulating higher penalties and interest charges.
