This medicine can cause eosinophilia and systemic symptoms syndrome (DRESS) drug reaction. This medicine is used as a painkiller to get relief from pain. Mefenamic acid is used in pain relievers for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, pain, swelling, fever and toothache.

The commission said in its alert that DRESS syndrome has been detected from preliminary analysis of adverse drug reactions from the Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PvPI) database. DRESS syndrome is a serious allergic reaction caused by certain medicines. Due to this, problems like skin rashes, fever and lymphadenopathy can occur.
Painkiller Safety
These problems can occur between two to eight weeks after taking the medicine. However, this drug is not an over the counter medicine and it is given only on doctor’s prescription. It is used extensively in India. Apart from menstrual pain, headache, muscle and joint pain, this medicine is also given to children in cases of high fever.
Top brands in this category include Blue Cross Laboratories’ Meftal, Mannkind Pharma’s Mefkind P, Pfizer’s Ponstan, Serum Institute’s Mefnorm and Dr. Reddy’s Ibuklin P. In this alert, medical professionals and patients have been asked to closely monitor the side effects of the medicine. It has also been said that if any such reaction occurs after taking the medicine, then register suspected adverse drug reactions and report them to the IPC.
