The Delhi government has issued new guidelines for the management of old vehicles. According to the information released by the Transport Department, the registration of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol/CNG vehicles older than 15 years has been canceled in Delhi from 2024. The number of such ‘end of life’ vehicles is more than 55 lakh. The list of such vehicles has been put on the website of the Transport Department.

There is a complete ban on parking these vehicles in public places, including the area outside the house. In such a situation, vehicle owners have these options.

Drivers have 3 options

1. Park such vehicle only in your personal parking space, which should not be a shared parking space.

2. A ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) will have to be obtained to take the vehicle out of the National Capital Region within one year of the expiry date of the vehicle.

3. Scrap the vehicle. For this, use any registered vehicle scrapping facility through ‘Voluntary Vehicle Scrapping Application’. Exemption in motor vehicle tax on registration of new vehicle can also be obtained through this process.

Drivers will be fined

If old vehicles are found running or parked in public places in Delhi, they can be confiscated, a fine of Rs 5,000 or 10,000 can be imposed. Apart from this, soon such vehicles will not even get fuel.

Talk of scrapping vehicles

If the vehicle is not taken out of Delhi within a month of the issuance of NOC, its parking will also be illegal. The Transport Department, Delhi Traffic Police, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Municipal Corporation, and Delhi Cantonment Board can seize such vehicles. The information also states that it is in your interest to scrap such vehicles or get NOC and send them outside the NCR region.
