The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Wednesday announced that it is making FASTag payments easier in India. As part of this process, the organisation will soon roll out a system to make FASTag payments using mobile numbers.
NPCI announced the news in a post on Social Media X (formerly known as Twitter). The post reads, “Another pioneering innovation from NPCI! Experience the power of simplicity with simplified FASTag payments using just mobile number and keep moving forward.” The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Global Fintech Fest 2024 or GFF 2024 event being organised by NPCI in Mumbai from August 28 to August 30.

How will this benefit commuters? While the scope of the impact of this latest announcement by NPCI is not yet clear, this decision is likely to bring about changes to make FASTag payments easier and faster.
What else was announced at Global Fintech Fest 2024?
It can be said that the mobile number-powered Fastag is not the only major announcement made by NPCI at GFF 2024 on Wednesday. Apart from this, the organization also showcased special machines that will dispense NCMC cards for travelers.
“Now get your NCMC card with Zero KYC through auto-dispensing machines,” NPCI wrote in a separate post on X.

It is worth noting that NCMC stands for National Common Mobility Card. Through this card, passengers can pay for metro, bus, suburban railway, toll, parking, smart city and retail etc. using their existing debit or credit card.
