The Union Road and Transport Ministry has taken an important decision regarding toll tax. The Union Road and Transport Ministry has made new rules regarding toll tax. Now private vehicles equipped with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will get exemption from toll tax if they travel up to 20 km. This system has been implemented with the objective of providing relief to the drivers. The new policy will only benefit vehicles in which the GNSS system is working and drivers can cover a distance of up to 20 km.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Transport, private vehicle owners will not have to pay any tax for traveling up to 20 KM daily on highways and expressways. However, this exemption will be available to those who have GNSS system running in their vehicles. Whereas, if private vehicle drivers cover a distance of more than 20 km, the toll will be charged based on the actual distance.
What is GNSS and what are its uses?
\Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a modern technology used for vehicle tracking and navigation. This technology is similar to GPS (Global Positioning System), which detects the exact location of the vehicle and the route of travel. This system has recently been implemented by the Ministry of Roads and Transport as a toll collection system in conjunction with FASTAG. The vehicle’s journey is tracked by the GNSS system, and the toll fee is calculated based on it. This system is already being used on some major highways and expressways.
Pilot project in Haryana and Karnataka
This system has been implemented for the first time as a pilot project in Haryana and Karnataka. GNSS based toll collection system is being tested in these areas. If this system is successful then it will be decided to implement it in the entire country.
