The Assam government on Wednesday announced that those who have not yet applied for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will no longer get Aadhaar cards.
The state government took this decision after a cabinet meeting today. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told a press conference that this step has been taken to stop infiltration from Bangladesh.
Chief Minister Sarma said, in the last two months, Assam Police, Tripura Police and Border Security Force (SSB) have caught a large number of infiltrators. The Assam government is concerned about this infiltration from Bangladesh and wants to strengthen its system to stop it. He said, we need to strengthen our system further, so the Aadhar card process has been tightened. From now on, the General Administration Department of the state government will be the main responsible for the verification process of Aadhar card applicants. An additional district commissioner will be appointed for this task in every district.
If applied for NRC, regional officer will verify
Sarma said that after the Aadhar application, the UIDAI will send it to the state government for verification. After this, the local circle officer will check whether the applicant or his family had applied for NRC or not. If the application has not been made for NRC, then the Aadhar card application will be immediately cancelled and a report regarding this will be sent to the central government. If it is found that an application was made for NRC, then the circle officer will conduct verification at the regional level to investigate the matter. After the verification, if the officers are completely satisfied, then the Aadhar card will be issued.
The instructions will not apply to central government employees
The Chief Minister also clarified that this new instruction will not apply to central government employees who are working in other states and who have not applied in NRC. Sarma said, in this way we will further tighten the process of issuing Aadhar card so that no suspicious person can get this identity card. The final NRC list was released in Assam on 31 August 2019, in which 19,06,657 applicants were excluded. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included, while 3,30,27,661 people had applied in NRC.
