The Post Office Act, 2023 eliminates provisions such as special privileges for collection, processing and delivery of letters to make life easier and to facilitate ease of doing business. No punitive provisions have been made in the Act to promote the spirit of maximum governance and minimum government.
The new postal law has come into force in India from Tuesday. The Government of India has issued a notification to give effect to the provisions of the Post Office Act, 2023. The purpose of this Act is to create a simple legislative framework to provide the benefits of citizen-centric services, banking services and government schemes to the last person of the society, thereby making living easier.

The Act eliminates provisions such as special privileges for collection, processing and delivery of letters to facilitate ease of doing business and ease of living. No penal provisions have been made in the Act to promote the spirit of maximum governance and minimum government. It provides for a format for prescribing standards regarding the use of items, identifiers and postcodes. The Act has replaced the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.
In a statement issued, the Ministry of Communications said that with the enactment of the Post Office Act 2023, the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 has been repealed.
