A passport is not only a travel document but also a proof of a person’s identity and nationality. It is required for foreign travel, education, business and other purposes. 

The Government of India keeps changing the passport rules from time to time to make the application process easy and transparent. Recently the government has made some important amendments in the passport rules. Under the new rules, the birth certificate will be considered the only valid proof of date of birth for applicants born on or after October 1, 2023. At the same time, old applicants can opt for other documents.

Big change in passport rules

The Government of India has issued an official note amending the Passport Rules 1980. Under the new rules, birth certificate will be considered the only proof of date of birth for persons born on or after 1 October 2023. These certificates should be issued only by the appropriate government authorities.

Required documents for new passport rules

As per the new rules implemented by the government, applicants born after 1 October 2023 will be required to submit birth certificate. This certificate can be issued by the following government bodies

  • Registrar of Births and Deaths
  • Municipal council
  • Other Government bodies empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969

At the same time, applicants born before 1 October 2023 will have the option of other documents. They can submit any one of the following documents to prove their date of birth

  • Driving License
  • School Leaving Certificate
  • Other valid Government documents

Types of Indian Passport

Indian passport is an important document issued by the Government of India, with the help of which Indian citizens can travel abroad. It is mainly of three types:

Regular Passport – Issued to general citizens and has a validity of 10 years.

Official Passport – Issued to government officials for travelling abroad.

Diplomatic Passport – Issued to high government officials and diplomats. It is also called VVIP passport.

The main objective of these amendments by the government is to make the passport application process more secure and transparent. The new rules will help prevent fake documents and make the identity of citizens more secure and strong.
