Travel up to 20 km will be tax free

According to the new notification issued after the meeting, “Private vehicle owners will not have to pay any fee for traveling up to 20 kilometers on highways and expressways per day. The only condition for this will be that the exemption will be given only to those vehicles whose vehicles will have GNSS system operating. However, for distances more than 20 kilometers, the fee will be charged on the basis of actual distance traveled. Not only this, the notification even states that “The driver, owner or person in charge of any mechanical vehicle other than a national permit vehicle who uses the same section of a national highway, permanent bridge, bypass or tunnel will be charged zero-user fee up to 20 kilometers of travel in each direction in a day under the Global Navigation Satellite System based user fee collection system.

Success in test trial

The Road Ministry had introduced the GNSS-based toll collection system along with Fastag. However, this system has been started on very few highways. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that for this system, “a pilot study has been done on the Bengaluru-Mysore section of NH-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana, after the success of which, now the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is to be implemented on other highways of the country as well.
