With the start of the new year, the central government has implemented new guidelines for sign boards on highways and expressways. These guidelines will be effective from January 24, which aim to provide clear, standardized and timely information to road users. Through these changes, efforts are being made to reduce accidents and make traffic more streamlined.
Speed limit and warning signs
Under the new system, signs will be installed before potentially dangerous spots such as rumble strips, so that drivers get time to adjust their speed. Speed limits will be given through sign boards every five kilometres. These boards have been designed to be easy for drivers to read and understand.
Standardization and uniformity
The Ministry of Road Transport has standardized the size and color of letters and numbers used on sign boards. This move will increase the uniformity of the indicators and make them easier to understand. Also, arrangements have been made to clearly display the speed limits of different vehicles on the same board.
No parking and pedestrian safety
“No parking” boards will be installed every five kilometres to reduce accidents and traffic jams. Apart from this, giving priority to the safety of pedestrians, arrangements have been made to provide information about crossings in advance.
To prepare these guidelines, a committee of experts was formed which studied international experiences and road safety statistics in detail. Based on this, road signs were divided into three main categories: mandatory, warning and informational signs .
