Meta has announced plans to cut about 5% of its workforce, primarily targeting low-performing employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared this information on the company’s internal workplace platform on Tuesday. He said that 2025 is going to be an “intense year” for the company.
Zuckerberg’s message in internal memo
Zuckerberg informed employees in an internal memo that the company was taking performance management standards to a higher level. He wrote, “We will quickly remove those who are not meeting expectations. This decision has been taken to keep the best people on our teams.”
Employees affected by the cuts will get information and assistance.
Meta said that employees affected by the layoffs will be informed by February 10. They will be provided with a generous severance package, as was done in earlier layoffs. The company also said that if there are optimistic expectations about an employee’s future performance, then they can be considered to be retained in the team.
There had been widespread layoffs before
The move comes after Meta’s previous major layoffs. In 2022 and 2023, Meta eliminated 21,000 jobs, representing nearly a quarter of the company’s total workforce.
Community notes and inclination towards free expression
Last week, Zuckerberg announced that Meta would end its fact-checking program and adopt the “community notes” model of Elon Musk’s Platform X. Zuckerberg said, “Recent elections have shown a cultural shift towards prioritizing speech. As part of this shift, we will focus on reducing errors, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression.”
Zuckerberg also said in his memo that the company would focus on key areas such as AI, next-generation computing platforms and the future of social media. He called it an “intense and challenging year” and said teams would be empowered with top-performing people.
