JEE Main Age Limit: NTA removes age limit, what is the tie-breaking criteria?

JEE Main Notification: National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the official notification for JEE Main 2025. Registration for JEE Main 2025 Session 1 has started on the official website – jeemain.nta.nic.in, the last date to apply is November 22, 2024.

According to the official notification, the exam is scheduled from January 22 to January 31, 2025. Admit cards will be issued three days before the commencement of the exam.

Ahead of the JEE Main 2025 exam, NTA has updated the tie-breaking rules to rank candidates with equal marks. Under the revised system, the age of the candidates and JEE Main 2025 application number will no longer be a factor in the ranking decision.

The official notice states, “There is no age limit for candidates to appear in JEE (Mains) – 2025. Candidates who have passed Class XII/equivalent examination in 2023 & 2024 or appearing in 2025 can appear in JEE (Mains) – 2025 examination irrespective of their age. However, candidates may need to fulfil the age criteria of the institute in which they are seeking admission.” Now the ranking will be based only on the exam performance of the candidates. If the score remains the same, the candidates will get the same JEE Main rank.

JEE Main 2025: Tie-Breaking Rules

For JEE Main 2025, if the candidates have the same total NTA score, the tie will be resolved using these criteria.

  • Candidate with highest NTA score in Maths
  • Candidate having highest NTA score in Physics
  • Candidate having highest NTA score in Chemistry
  • Candidates with a low ratio of correct answers to wrong answers across all subjects in the exam
  • Candidates with a low ratio of correct answers to wrong answers in Maths
  • Candidates with a low ratio of correct answers to wrong answers in Physics
  • Candidates with lower ratio of wrong answers to correct answers in Chemistry
  • If the situation of tie still persists then the candidates will be given equal rank.

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) consists of two papers. Paper 1 is conducted for admission to Graduate Engineering Programmes (BE/BTech) in National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and institutions/universities funded or recognized by the participating State Governments.

JEE Main also serves as an eligibility test for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Paper 2, on the other hand, is conducted for admission to BArch and BPlanning courses across India. For more details, candidates can visit the official website of JEE Main 2025.
