ITR Filing: Deadline for filing ITR extended to 31 August? Income Tax Department itself told the truth

Income Tax Department: If you have not yet filed Income Tax Return (ITR) this year, then this news is of your use. Actually, due to the problem in the e-filing website this year, the Income Tax Bar Association has demanded to extend the date of ITR filing to 31 August.

But now in a warning issued by the Income Tax Department, it has been said that the news published in a Gujarat newspaper is wrong. In this news going viral on social media, it is being claimed that the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) has been extended to 31 August 2024.

Wrong information given about extension of date for filing ITR

The Income Tax Department clarified that this information is incorrect and the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2023-24 is July 31, 2024 only. The Income Tax Department said that we have received information that a newspaper cutting is going viral on social media, which is giving wrong information about the extension of the date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR). This news is completely baseless. Taxpayers are advised to check the updates only from the official website of the Income Tax Department.

The Income Tax Department has also warned people about the fraud in the name of
income tax refund. The department said that people waiting for refund should be careful. Some fraudsters are sending SMS and emails to people on the pretext of refund and trying to withdraw money from their bank account. According to the information given on the website of the Income Tax Department, more than 4 crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) have been filed till 22 July 2024. This number is 8% more than the returns filed during the same period last year.

More than 15 lakh ITR filings in a day

The number of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed daily on July 16 has exceeded 15 lakh and is expected to increase further as the date of July 31, 2024 approaches. While the record of filing one crore ITRs for Assessment Year (AY) 2024-25 was made on 23 June 2024. After this, the number of ITR filers reached 2 crore and 3 crore on July 7 and July 16 respectively. After this, the next one crore people filed income tax in six days.

More than 4 crore ITR filings so far

Last year, the figure of 4 crore was achieved on 24 July. The department informed that taxpayers facing any kind of technical problem related to filing ITR can contact the toll free helpdesk number (1800 103 0025 or 1800 419 0025) or Efilingwebmanager@incometax.gov.in (email).

Such problems were reported

All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) have cited several issues and demanded extension of the last date for filing ITR from 31 July to 31 August 2024. On their part, problems have been reported such as disruption in portal access, difficulty in accessing or downloading the required forms, mismatch of pre-filled data and information in Form 26AS/AIS, submission related problems, problem in resetting password, difficulty in generating challan, error message during return submission, non-receipt of OTP to e-verify the return and problem in downloading ITR receipt.
