Meta has rolled out a new Teen Accounts feature to make its social media app Instagram safer for young users. Apart from this, parents will get better control with the new features.

Social media company Meta has rolled out new privacy and parental controls for Instagram users, which will lead to changes in the way younger teenage Instagram users use the app. Amid the discussion about the negative impact of Instagram and other social media platforms on children and teens, Instagram is constantly making improvements to protect users from these.

Meta has said that the accounts of users under the age of 18 will automatically be considered ‘Teen Accounts’ and these will become private accounts by default. Only those people will be able to message or tag these teen accounts, whom they follow or are connected to. Apart from this, the sensitivity settings for the content shown on Instagram will also be made the most restricted, so that obscene or sensitive content is not visible to these users.

You will be able to change the settings only with the help of parents

The platform has decided that users under the age of 16 cannot change their default settings. These teen users will need parental permission to change the settings. Apart from this, parents are also being given special settings, through which they will be able to track their children’s activity in the app. Parents can check who their children are engaging with and talking to through their accounts.

Parents get the option to limit the use of these accounts. Many previous studies have revealed that social media is having a bad effect especially on young users. Many have held it responsible for mental problems and diseases like depression, anxiety and learning disability. This is the reason why Meta has improved its existing apps and services and is taking steps towards making them safe.

Let us tell you, after the ban on Tik-Tok app in India, the user base of Instagram has increased rapidly and users are liking to watch short videos or reels.
