Why was the decision taken to remove fuel charge?

Indigo, a major player in the Indian aviation sector and the airline company with the country’s largest market share, has said in a statement issued in this regard that Indigo Airlines is happy to announce the removal of fuel surcharge. It has come into effect on domestic and international routes from today. It has been told by the airlines that this decision has been taken after the recent reduction in the prices of aviation fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

Indigo had imposed the charge in October 2023

After the continuous increase in the prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), Indigo had imposed fuel surcharge in October 2023 last year. The company had taken this decision to compensate for the losses caused by rising prices of jet fuel. Airlines passengers had to pay this fuel surcharge according to the distance of travel, but now they have got rid of this charge and after its removal, tickets can become cheaper for those traveling by Indigo Flight.

According to the report, while applying the fuel surcharge in October 2023, Indigo had said that the fuse charge has been fixed at Rs 300 to Rs 1,000 depending on the distance of air travel. It is worth noting that the direct impact of ATF prices is visible on fares, in fact, ATF accounts for about 40 percent of the operating costs of any airline.

Prices have been falling for three consecutive months

Talking about the fall in the prices of ATF, let us tell you that recently, on the very first day of the beginning of the year 2024, i.e. on January 1, there was good news for the passengers traveling by air. Oil marketing companies had reduced the prices of ATF. According to the website of IOCL, Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) has been reduced by 4% in the capital Delhi, after which the price of ATF has come down by Rs 4,162.50 per kiloliter to Rs 1,01,993.17 per kiloliter. This was the third consecutive cut in jet fuel prices by oil companies since November 2023.

Effect of reduction in ATF prices visible

The relief effect of the decision of oil marketing companies to reduce the prices of ATF is now visible and Indigo Airlines has been the first in this matter to give a New Year gift to its customers. It is noteworthy that due to the cuts made by the companies in these three months, the price of aviation fuel has reduced by Rs 16,206 per kilolitre.

If we talk about metros other than Delhi, it has become Rs 1,10,962.83 per kiloliter in Kolkata, Rs 95,372.43 per kiloliter in Mumbai and Rs 1,06,042.99 per kiloliter in Chennai.
