Indian Railways is going to run a hydrogen train in the country. This train will run 90 km between Jind and Panipat in Haryana. 360 kg of hydrogen will be filled in the engine for one round. The work of building a hydrogen plant is also going on at a fast pace.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director Information and Publicity, Ministry of Railways, said that Indian Railways is working towards zero carbon by 2030. Hydrogen will be used as fuel.

The test was successful

The work of hydrogen fuel cell and infrastructure is being done as a pilot project. Its test has been successful. The design of the cell and the hydrogen plant have been approved. Global agencies have given approval regarding hydrogen safety. Indian Railways has awarded the work of retro fitment of existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) for hydrogen fuel. There is a plan to make a prototype train at ICF Chennai.

Plan to run 35 hydrogen trains

Dilip Kumar said that Indian Railways has planned 35 hydrogen trains under Hydrogen Heritage, in which the cost of each train is estimated to be Rs 80 crore and Rs 70 crore for land infrastructure for heritage and hill routes.

Construction of the plant begins

The construction of the plant has started near the GRP police station at the railway junction. In this, a design has been prepared to collect water from the roofs of the buildings including the entire campus, hydrogen will be prepared from this water and trains will be run from it. Work is going on for this. A tank of three thousand kilograms of hydrogen storage will be built in the plant and only two trains can be run in the first phase. At the same time, excess hydrogen can be transported to another place with the help of tankers. The construction of a hydrogen gas plant at the railway junction started in 2022 at a cost of Rs 118 crore. This gas plant is being installed in an area of two thousand meters.

The engine will let out steam

The hydrogen gas powered engine will emit steam and water instead of smoke. The train will make 60 percent less noise than a conventional diesel engine. Its speed and passenger carrying capacity will also be equal to that of a diesel train.
