India Post Drone Delivery: The Department of Posts has taken steps to explore the feasibility of a project to deliver letters through drones in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
A statement issued by the department said that upon successful operation of the ‘Proof of Concept’ (POC) initiative, which was launched to gather evidence in support of the feasibility of the project, the department will expand the use of drones to deliver letters and other goods in other difficult and hilly areas. The Department of Posts has signed an agreement with Sky Air Mobility to operate the POC.
POC started for delivering letters through drones
The statement said, ‘The Department of Posts, in sync with the latest developments in the courier express and parcel market, started a POC on October 21, 2024 for delivering letters through drones between Chowkham Post Office located in Namsai and Lohit Districts of Arunachal Pradesh and Wakro Branch Post Office, Namsai.’ Under this, a drone took off from Chowkham Post Office at 10.40 am and reached Wakro Branch Post Office at 11.02 am.
The two and a half hour journey was covered in minutes.
The statement said that on the return journey, the drone took off from Wakro Branch Post Office at 11.44 am and reached Chowkham Post Office at 12.08 pm. Wakro Branch Post Office is 45 km away from Chowkham Post Office. Due to the hilly terrain, the current time taken for the letter to reach between Chowkham Post Office and Wakro Branch Post Office is about two to two and a half hours, as letters and other parcels are transported through buses of Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services.
By delivering letters through eco-friendly drones, the time taken between the two places has been reduced to 22-24 minutes. According to the statement, upon successful operation of this project, the Postal Department will expand the use of drones to deliver letters and parcels in other difficult and hilly areas.
