Why were the new rules made?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have decided to simplify the process of spectrum allocation for satellite broadband services. Under this new rule, satellite service providers will get more convenience in obtaining licenses, which will enable them to quickly expand their networks.

This decision has been taken to promote satellite internet services in India and ensure digital inclusion. The Government of India aims to provide high-speed internet services even in remote areas of the country.

What impact will it have on Elon Musk’s Starlink

Elon Musk’s Starlink is already planning to start its services in India. The new rules will help them set up their network faster. Starlink had already applied for satellite internet services in India and now they are hoping that they will be able to get the license quickly under the new rules. However, there may be some challenges in this process. Big telecom companies like JIO and Airtel are in favor of the auction process and have requested the government to allocate spectrum in a transparent manner.

Small players will get a chance

Some experts believe that the administrative allocation process will also allow smaller players to enter the market, while others see it as a win-win situation for the larger players. Recently, Kumar Mangalam Birla said at the 8th India Mobile Congress, “Satellite broadband providers should also pay license fees, so that competition can be at a level playing field.”
