Rain Alert: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rains in four states of South India—Karnataka, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh—due to which schools and colleges have been closed in many districts.
Life is being affected due to torrential rains in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru and the central and southern parts of the state. According to the IMD, this weather has persisted due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has said that the weather in the northern regions of Karnataka may remain the same for the next 24 hours, and the situation is unlikely to improve for the next four days. Due to heavy rains, flood-like situation has arisen in many low-lying areas. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for coastal Karnataka, Mysuru, Kodagu, Hassan, (Weather Update) Tumkuru, Kolar, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga and Chikkaballapur districts, which may have a profound impact on life.
An alert has also been issued in Puducherry due to heavy rains. The government has decided to keep schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal closed on Wednesday. Home Minister A. Nammasivayam said that government and private educational institutions will remain closed, while 62 NDRF teams have already been deployed.
Chennai and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu also received intermittent rains on Tuesday. According to the IMD, the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal has now turned into a low pressure, and is likely to become a depression later. The state government has cleared the roads by removing trees and declared a holiday in schools and colleges. People have been requested to get weather information through the ‘TN Alert App’, while work from home facility has been provided for IT employees. However, metro, flight and train services are running normally.
