A low pressure area has formed over central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal. Due to its effect, heavy rainfall is expected in West Bengal, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh for the next two to three days.
The states for which the Meteorological Department has issued an alert regarding heavy rains at different places for the next seven days include Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir are also in these states.
What did the Meteorological Department say about Cyclone Asna
The Meteorological Department (IMD) said about the cyclonic storm Asna that deep depression over the Arabian Sea is causing heavy rainfall in Gujarat. Asna is likely to move west-northwestwards across the northeastern Arabian Sea and move away from the Indian coast during the next 24 hours. The IMD said that the storm, moving at a speed of 14 kmph, was spotted in the early hours of Saturday, 250 km west of Nalia in Gujarat towards Pakistan. Asna is 160 km south-southwest of Karachi and 350 km east-southeast of Pakistan’s Pasni area.
Gujarat, which has been devastated by heavy rains and floods, was under the threat of cyclone Asna throughout the day. The coastal areas of Kutch were evacuated. However, the threat of devastation in Gujarat was averted as the storm turned towards Oman late at night. Due to the effect of the cyclone, strong winds blew here and heavy rains occurred. A low pressure area has also formed in the Bay of Bengal which can cause heavy rains in the coastal areas from the Northeast to West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana.
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rains in the next seven days at different places in 17 states including Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand to Kerala and Maharashtra in the south. During this period, light to scattered rains are also expected in 14 other states. This is the first time since 1976 that a cyclone has arisen from the Arabian Sea in the month of August.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low pressure area formed over the coast of Kutch, adjoining areas of Pakistan and the North East Arabian Sea has turned into cyclonic storm Asna. As of 11:30 am on Friday, cyclone Asna was located 190 km west-northwest of Bhuj. There is little chance of it hitting the coast of Gujarat, but as a precaution, people living in coastal areas of Kutch district, especially in vulnerable houses, are being evacuated to safer places.
Heavy rains in these states
During the 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains were recorded in Saurashtra and Kutch of Gujarat, while torrential rains were recorded at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Kerala. Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and coastal Karnataka also received heavy to very heavy rains.

250 passengers stranded on Hemkund Sahib Yatra route
Jyotirmath. About 250 passengers got stranded due to the overflowing of the rainy stream on the Hemkund Sahib Yatra route. They were rescued safely by SDRF and police personnel. Due to heavy rains in the afternoon near Atlakoti glacier on the Hemkund Sahib Yatra route, the rainy stream overflowed. Due to this, about 250 devotees returning from the Hemkund Sahib Yatra got stuck. SDRF and police personnel from Ghangaria police station reached the spot and evacuated all the pilgrims safely.
Body of girl missing since cloudburst found
The death toll due to floods in three districts of Himachal Pradesh after cloudburst on July 31 has risen to 21. The body of a girl who was swept away by floodwaters in Samej in Rampur district was found in Shimla district on Friday. Officials said the body was found below the Kol dam in Sunni in the morning. The body of the girl aged 14 to 15 years was found in a very bad condition. 36 people were missing from the three districts, out of which 21 bodies have been found.
