IMD Alert: The weather in the country is going to change once again. According to IMD (India Meteorological Department), a new western disturbance is becoming active from today, which will cause rain along with cold winds and dense fog in north-west India. This disturbance will remain effective till January 22, which will cause a sudden drop in temperature and increase the chill.
Snowfall and heavy rain in northwest India
Due to the effect of this western disturbance, snowfall and rain is expected in the western Himalayan region starting from January 18. According to the IMD, snowfall may occur in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand from January 18 to 22, while rain is expected in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan on January 21 and 22.
Heavy rain alert in South India
Also, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea, heavy to very heavy rains may occur in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry from 18 to 20 January and in Kerala on 19-20 January. During this period, hailstorms along with strong thunderstorms are also likely, which may make the weather even colder in these areas.
Temperatures drop and cold wave warnings
While the minimum temperature will remain in minus in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the temperature may fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius in other parts of North-West India. On the contrary, the minimum temperature in Gujarat is expected to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next 2 days. There will be no major change in mercury in Central-East India and Maharashtra for the next 4 days.
Chance of dense fog
The IMD has issued a warning of dense to very dense fog in many parts of northwest India in the next few days. Visibility may be extremely low due to dense fog in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till January 20. At the same time, fog alert has also been issued in Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and Odisha.
Cold wave continues in Delhi-NCR
There is no hope of relief from cold in Delhi and NCR region at present. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain during 21-22 January, due to which the temperature may fall further. At present, people are facing dense fog and severe cold in Delhi, due to which the risk of accidents on the roads can also increase.
