Going to America and living there has now become difficult. President Donald Trump has made a big change in the immigration policy. Now all the immigrants living in America will have to always keep their identity card in their pocket. The people for whom this rule has been made mandatory are those who live legally, work and students. Let us understand what kind of challenges have increased for immigrants in America now. Let us understand this.

What is the new rule of Trump government for immigrants

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken this decision. This decision has come after a court order which called for the re-implementation of a rule from Trump’s time. This rule says that people who are living in America illegally will have to register their names with the government. Now this rule is going to be implemented afresh.

Applies to all non-Americans over the age of 18

According to this new rule, every non-citizen aged 18 years or above will have to carry his identity card with him at all times. DHS has clearly stated that this rule will be strictly enforced and no leniency will be given for violating it. This rule has come into effect from April 11. DHS has also said that they will pay more attention to this rule and will strictly enforce it.

What is the Alien Law behind this rule?

This change comes after an executive order ‘Protecting the American People Against Invasion’ signed on January 20. In this order, DHS has been directed to implement the Alien Registration Act, which was being ignored for a long time.

What to do if you don’t have the required documents

The new rules mainly apply to those who do not have the necessary documents to stay in the US. All non-citizens who are 14 years of age or older and have been in the US for more than 30 days will have to register their names with the government by filling Form G-325R. Children of immigrants will also have to re-register and give their fingerprints within 30 days of turning 14.

If the address is changed, you will have to provide the new address information
Apart from this, those who are coming to America after April 11 , will have to register within 30 days of arrival. If someone changes his address, he will have to inform DHS about the new address within 10 days. Failure to follow this rule can result in a fine of up to $ 5,000.

Trump’s strict rule will not apply to these people

However, this rule does not apply to those who already have a valid visa, such as those on a student visa or work visa, or those with a green card , employment documentation or I-94 admission record. These people are considered to have already completed the registration process. For example, Indian citizens who are living in the US with a valid visa or green card do not need to register under the new rule. However, they will have to carry their identity cards at all times and show them when asked by officials.

7 lakh Indians are living illegally in America

According to DHS data, around 2.2 lakh Indians were living illegally in the US as of 2022. However, other organisations such as the Pew Research Center estimate the number to be as high as 7 lakh, while the Migration Policy Institute estimates the figure to be around 3.75 lakh.

The level of surveillance increased one step further in America

This new rule is going to be very important for the immigrant community living in the US. Especially for those who do not have permission to live legally. This will add another level of documentation and monitoring for them, which is already a complex immigration system. This policy can spark debate about privacy, civil rights and widespread impact on immigrant communities across the country.
