The West Bengal government has taken a big decision. This decision of the government is being considered a big blow for gutkha-tobacco eaters. In fact, the state government has extended the ban on the manufacture, storage and sale of tobacco or nicotine-containing gutkha and pan masala products for one more year from November 7.

The state health department issued this order on October 24, citing public health concerns. According to the order, “The State Food Safety Commissioner has the right to ban the manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of any food item in the entire state for a period of one year in the interest of public health under Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.”

There is a ban in these states too

Earlier, the ban on the sale of gutkha and pan masala was extended for 1 year amid the Haryana assembly elections. Not only this, there will also be a ban on the storage and manufacture of pan masala and gutkha in the state.

Gutkha and pan masala were also banned for one year in Telangana last year. According to the order issued by the Food Safety Commissioner, the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of gutkha-pan masala was banned in the state.

Earlier, from June 1, 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government had completely banned the simultaneous sale of pan masala and tobacco at the same shop. The Food Safety Commissioner had issued an order to make this order effective from June 1, 2024.
