What are gig workers

Actually, gig workers are those people who usually do temporary jobs. They work as independent contractors or freelancers. The special thing is that such employees also have facilities like fixing the working hours. They also do project based jobs. NITI Aayog estimates that there are 65 lakh gig workers in the country, but the figure may cross two crores.

Who will get the benefit

This decision to implement the framework is also being called a ‘soft launch’ of the provisions included in the labor law. Actually, this is because not all states are ready to implement the Labor Code yet. On Thursday, Mandaviya said, ‘We cannot keep them away from their rights until the rules are implemented. We have to bring a policy before that.’

He also said that they will try to implement the social security framework before the budget in February next year. The special thing is that some states have also made laws for gig workers. The minister says that the ministry is considering all the suggestions, because here there is no relationship between the employee and the employer. Also, the biggest thing is that where will the contribution for the social security of such employees come from, which is made by those who employ them.
