1. Martyrdom Day – Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha

Martyr Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha was born on 24 May 1896 in Sarabha village of Ludhiana district. He was a great revolutionary of the Indian freedom struggle and his contribution was very important. He openly protested against the British government during the Indian freedom struggle. He was hanged by the British rulers on 16 November 1915. To pay tribute to the martyrdom of Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha, his Martyrdom Day is celebrated every year on 16 November. This day is celebrated as a government holiday in Punjab, and schools, colleges, banks and government offices in Punjab remain closed on this day. Tribute ceremonies are organized on this day in Ludhiana and other districts.

Why will there be a holiday on November 17?

November 17 is Sunday, which is usually a weekly holiday in India. Most offices, schools, colleges and banks remain closed on this day. However, Punjab will have three days holiday from November 15 to November 17, as November 15 is Guru Nanak Jayanti, November 16 is Shaheedi Diwas and November 17 is Sunday. Thus, Punjab will have three consecutive days holiday from November 15 to 17, which will be a good rest opportunity for employees and students.
