Google Layoffs: Tech giant Google has recently taken an important decision and announced the layoff of 10% of its employees at the managerial level. This includes director and vice president level employees.

This information has come to light in a report by Business Insider, in which CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the move during a consensus meeting. The company has taken this step with the aim of making operations more efficient due to increasing competition, especially AI-focused companies like OpenAI.

Redefining Googleyness

Sundar Pichai also stressed the need to redefine “Googleyness” during the meeting . This term symbolizes the company’s culture and values. Pichai said, “It’s time to update what Googleyness means for today’s Google,” which points to a cultural change so that the company’s policies can be in line with modern challenges.

Past layoff statistics and impact on the global technology sector

In September 2022, Pichai announced plans to make Google 20% more efficient. After this, in January 2023, the company cut 12,000 jobs. According to Layoffs.fyi, so far in 2024, 539 tech companies have fired 1,50,034 employees, while in 2023, 1,193 companies fired a total of 2,64,220 employees.

The race between Google and OpenAI

As companies such as Google and OpenAI race to release cutting-edge AI-based consumer products, critics have warned of a lack of safeguards around the development of AI technology that could pose a risk to humanity.

Google’s new AI tool: Whisk

Google recently launched a new AI tool “Whisk” that lets users upload photos and get composite AI-generated images. It is an image-to-image generator as opposed to a text-to-image tool like DALL-E.

Whisk aims to provide users with instant inspiration. It is a fun and simple feature compared to traditional image editors. Users can represent the subject setting and style through photos after which Whisk combines them into a unique image.
