Retirement age increased: In a major decision, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced to increase the retirement age of university professors from 62 to 65 years. According to an official document, the decision was taken by the Administrative Council headed by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. However, it can also be decided on a case to case basis whether to increase the retirement age or not.

Decision can also be taken on case to case basis

A committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been constituted vide Government Order No. 183-JK (HE) of 2023 to scrutinize each case or decide the eligibility for age increase on any case. This will work to decide the age in these cases. The Higher Education Department (HED) has informed the Registrar, University of Jammu, about the government’s decision for necessary action and dissemination of information.

According to the government order, before reaching the age of 62 years, the performance of university professors will be thoroughly reviewed and evaluated on several parameters. The committee will consider the performance of the professor, including his physical and mental health and suitability for teaching.

According to the order, the committee will additionally evaluate academic contribution of professors considering parameters such as number of publications, books, chapters of books, seminars, conferences and workshops attended, development of new courses and courses, patents. The order states that the committee will evaluate the contribution of professors to the institute, including their participation in university committees and their contribution to the betterment of the institute.
