Cases of road accidents related to two-wheelers are coming to the fore every day. Keeping this in mind, the Road Transport Ministry is considering a plan to build dedicated lanes for two-wheelers. The ministry says that a plan is being considered to build separate lanes, underpasses and overbridges for two-wheelers and pedestrians on urban roads and highways. This will help in reducing road accidents.

The ministry says that the number of accidents is increasing due to all types of vehicles moving together on the road. This problem can be dealt with by providing different roads according to the type of vehicle. According to government data, two-wheeler drivers are involved in 44% of road accidents and deaths. Similarly, about 17% of road accidents involve pedestrians, while 19% of the dead are pedestrians.

The ministry has issued a consultation paper.

Pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders are the most prone to road accidents. Their safety on the road is the lowest. According to a report by the Times of India, the Transport Ministry has issued a consultation paper aimed at reducing road accidents.

India is included in the list of countries where the highest number of deaths occur in road accidents. According to the annual report ‘Road Accidents in India 2022’ of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a total of 4,61,312 road accidents occurred in the year 2022, in which 1,68,491 people lost their lives. While 4,43,366 people were injured.

According to government data, the country’s road network, including expressways, has expanded and the number of vehicles has also increased, which has led to an increase in road accidents. The severity of road accidents is determined by the number of people killed per 100 accidents. It has increased rapidly in the last decade. Its number was 28.2% in 2012, which has increased to 36.5% in 2022.

53 accidents every hour

According to the ministry’s data, about 53 accidents and 19 deaths occurred every hour in India last year. The report said that a total of 4,61,312 road accidents occurred across the country, in which 1,68,491 people lost their lives. In 2022, the number of road accidents increased by 11.9%, while the number of deaths also increased by 9.4%.
