But it is seen that many times the flight gets canceled or takes off very late, due to which passengers have to face a lot of problems. In such a situation, if you are also traveling by flight or are going to do so, then it becomes important for you to know about the rules related to ticket refund. So let’s know whether you get a refund if the flight takes off late or not.

Reasons for flight cancellation or delay

If any flight takes off late or gets cancelled, it causes a lot of trouble to the passengers. During the winter season, flights get delayed due to dense fog and flights get cancelled due to this reason too. This time too, due to winter, many flights have been cancelled while many flights are flying late.

When do I get a refund?

If you have also booked a flight ticket, then it is important for you to know about the refund, because it is possible that the flight takes off late or gets cancelled, then what do you have to do. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), if a flight has a duration of two and a half hours, but it is delayed by two hours, if the duration of a flight is between two and a half to five hours and it is delayed by three hours, whereas, if a flight is delayed by four hours or more, then in such a situation the airlines have to provide breakfast to the passengers.

On the other hand, if a flight is delayed by 6 hours or more, then DGCA has clear rules regarding this. According to these rules, the airline has to inform the passengers 24 hours before the departure time about how late their flight is. Here, if the passenger wants, he can ask for his seat in another flight or if he wants, he can get a full refund i.e. the entire amount of the booked ticket is taken back.

Not only refund but compensation can also be received

If you are going to travel by a flight, but that flight has been cancelled, then in such a situation it is the responsibility of the airline to inform the passengers at least 24 hours in advance that their flight has been cancelled. If the airline company does not do this, then it has to give compensation along with refund to the passengers. Which can vary according to the flight of different duration.

If you don’t get a refund, you can complain here

  • Although DGCA has clear rules regarding ticket refund, but still if you do not get a refund or the airlines are harassing you etc. In such a situation, you can complain about it online to DGCA
  • To lodge a complaint, you can visit the official website of DGCA https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/.
