Kashmir Snowfall: All flights at the Srinagar International airport were cancelled on Sunday due to poor visibility caused by snowfall in the mountains of the Kashmir Valley. Dense fog disrupted air traffic at the Srinagar airport due to low visibility early in the morning, officials said. Since Friday, flight operations at the airport have been affected due to low visibility due to fog, affecting thousands of local and non-local passengers. “All flights for the day have been cancelled due to bad weather. Visibility was up to 50 metres,” an airport official said.
The visibility should be around 1000-1100 metres for planes to land and take off at the airport. As the day progressed, there was snowfall in the mountains while it rained in the plains. Heavy snowfall is forecast for two days. Summer capital Srinagar also received light rain in the afternoon, which intensified as the day progressed. Heavy cold and snowfall is putting pressure on the lives of local people as essential services are disrupted.
“Snowfall is vital for our survival as it ensures water availability, agriculture and power generation throughout the year, however we have to face the immediate hardships faced by common people during winter like extreme cold, disruption of power and water supply, and closure of air and surface traffic,” said Mohammad Anees, a student at the University of Environmental Sciences.
Jammu and Kashmir tourism handle posted a stunning video of fresh snowfall to attract more tourists to Gulmarg on ‘X’. “It is snowing in Kashmir. Check out the latest snowfall visuals from the valley,” the post said. The traffic department advised people to be cautious due to the forecast of snowfall. Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police on Sunday said, “People are advised to be cautious and keep checking the road conditions. Traffic is moving on both sides of the highway. The weather is cloudy in Banihal-Qazigund sector (entry to Kashmir). Snowfall is also forecast by the weather department.”
