The first rule in this is that if your FASTag is blacklisted then you will not be able to do any transaction.
Suppose if FASTag is blacklisted or inactive. Or if there is no balance for more than an hour before reaching the toll booth, then the transaction will not be possible.
If FASTag remains blacklisted for 10 minutes after scanning, the payment will be rejected.
So the matter is that if your FASTag is in blacklist, inactive or has low balance, then while crossing the toll, the system will show error code 176. And you will have to pay double the penalty of toll tax.
The second rule is regarding the grace period for recharging.
You will get 70 minutes before crossing the toll booth when you can recharge your FASTag. Or you can check its status and correct it.
If you recharge your FASTag within 10 minutes of crossing the toll booth, you will get refund of the penalty toll tax.
The third rule of FASTag is about levying additional charges on delayed transactions
If you recharge FASTag after 15 minutes of crossing the toll booth, you will have to pay extra charge on top of the toll tax.
If wrong deduction has been made due to FASTag being blacklisted or having low balance, you can lodge a complaint within 15 days and you will get a refund from the bank.

This clearly means that you cannot do last minute recharge now. If you are not able to do FASTag recharge one hour before reaching the toll booth, then there is no benefit in doing it at the last minute.
There is also a chance of getting penalty refund if you recharge FASTag within 10 minutes of scanning.
Before crossing the toll booth, check the FASTag balance and also check the transactions at the toll booth to find out if there is any error in the system.
