Smart electricity meters are being installed under the central government’s scheme. A contract has been signed with Adani Energy Solution for this in Kumaon division. Meters are to be replaced in urban and rural areas in Terai-Bhabar.

Whereas in mountainous areas, smart meters will be installed only in city headquarters. A target has been set to install 6.55 lakh meters in Kumaon.

Energy Corporation is installing smart electricity meters equipped with modern technology. Earlier, there was a plan to provide supply in prepaid mode by recharging like a mobile phone, but seeing the confusion among the consumers, the corporation has changed the policy. In such a situation, smart meters will be installed, but the bill will come like the current system. In this, the employee will give the bill at home and it will have to be paid. However, this will happen for some time in the beginning. The prepaid feature will be activated once people understand the new system.
Under the central government’s scheme, smart electricity meters are being installed. For this purpose, a contract has been signed with Adani Energy Solution in Kumaon division. Meters are to be replaced in cities and rural areas in Terai-Bhabar. Whereas in the hilly areas, smart meters will be installed only in the city headquarters.
A target has been set to install 6.55 lakh meters in Kumaon. For this, the contracted company has completed the survey of more than 2.50 lakh houses. At the same time, 1.82 lakh new meters are to be installed in Nainital district and so far the survey has been completed in more than 70 thousand houses.
In the first phase, the sub-centers, offices, residences of officers and employees of the Energy Corporation have been connected to smart meters. In the second phase, the work of installing new meters in government offices and buildings is almost complete. With this, the process of changing the meters of domestic connections has started. The Energy Corporation has instructed the contracted company to increase the team to speed up the work.

Will not be able to put pressure on consumers

There were complaints about the employees of the contracted company pressuring people to install smart meters. After this, the Energy Corporation has given strict instructions that no kind of pressure will be put on people. However, the work of changing meters in homes will continue in a phased manner. But if a person wants to get a new meter installed first, he can contact the corporation.

Record will be visible on mobile even in postpaid system

Even if the smart meter is initially operated on a postpaid basis, people will be able to monitor electricity consumption through a mobile app. Consumers will be able to see the status of electricity usage every half hour or one hour. Along with this, the energy corporation will also be able to keep an eye on the electricity consumption record of each consumer from the control room.
The work of installing smart meters is going on, but the prepaid system will not be implemented right now. Initially, electricity will be supplied in postpaid form only. Later, the prepaid model will be implemented. Consumers are requested for cooperation. – AS Garbyal, Chief Engineer, Energy Corporation
