According to Anurag Jain, Secretary of the Ministry and Suman Prasad Singh, Joint Secretary of Highway Toll, the work of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) on-board unit will not be given to any one operator. Rather, there will be three to four operators for this work, so that there is no monopoly of any one operator. Apart from this, having more operators will increase accuracy, which was not possible with just one operator.

Will work all over the country

Its biggest advantage will be that the on-board unit installed in one state will work in another state as well. This way it can be understood that the on-board unit installed in Delhi will work on the Delhi-Mumbai as well as Bengaluru Mysore Expressway. In this way it will work on highways in any corner of the country. Drivers can get the on-board unit installed from any state.

Operators will be decided next month

In response to the question when the Global Navigation Satellite System will start, he said that the process will start soon. A period of one month has been set for the notification. After this, operators will be decided. Then it will be started as a pilot project on about five highways.

Benefits to drivers

This will benefit drivers. They will have to pay for the number of kilometres they travel. Currently, tolls are charged at fixed intervals. The driver has to go to the toll plaza to exit. After this, he exits the expressway. But after the on-board unit is installed, he can get off at any place.
