Delhi Heatwave: Government orders immediate closure of schools for summer vacations

All schools in Delhi will be closed. Due to the scorching heat in the areas of Delhi-NCR, the Delhi government on May 20 ordered that all private and government schools which have not yet been closed for summer vacations, will have to be closed immediately.

All schools will be closed immediately in Delhi

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next five days and has predicted heat wave conditions in many parts of Delhi and severe heat wave conditions in other parts. In view of the heat, according to the circular of the Directorate of Education, all schools were instructed to keep summer vacation from May 11 to June 30 for this academic year. According to the circular, all government schools will remain closed from May 11. However, some government-aided and unaided private schools are still open amid the ongoing scorching heat.

Some schools still haven’t done summer vacations

The circular said that heads of all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in Delhi are advised to close the schools for summer vacations with immediate effect. The Delhi-NCR area has seen a steady rise in temperatures in recent times, with Delhi recording the highest temperature this summer at 44.4 degrees Celsius on May 19. The temperature rose from 42.5 degrees Celsius on May 17 to 43.6 degrees Celsius on May 18.

List of school holidays in Delhi

Government and private schools in Delhi will remain closed on these dates as part of the official holidays from April to December.

11 May to 30 June: Summer Vacation

July 17: Muharram

15 August: Independence Day

26 August: Janmashtami

16 September: Eid-e-Milad

2 October: Gandhi Jayanti (national holiday)

October 9 to October 11: Winter Break

12 October: Dussehra

17 October: Valmiki Jayanti

31 October: Diwali

15 November: Guru Nanak Jayanti

December 25: Christmas
