The Delhi government has directed private schools to provide free uniforms and books to children from economically weaker sections, disadvantaged groups and children with special needs, so that education remains accessible and inclusive for all.
The Directorate of Education, Delhi has directed private schools to provide free uniforms, books and writing materials to economically weaker (EWS), disadvantaged group (DG) and persons with special needs (CWSN) students.
The move comes following complaints from parents and other stakeholders who said many private, unaided schools have failed to provide these essential facilities and are demanding money from parents in violation of rules.
Strict adherence to rules is necessary, action will be taken against private schools
As per Rule 8 of the Delhi Right to Education Rules, 2011 and a Directorate of Education (DoE) notification dated December 30, 2013, all private unaided recognised schools are required to provide free books, uniforms and stationery to students admitted from economically weaker sections (EWS), disadvantaged groups (DG) and children with special needs (CWSN) categories as per the Right to Education Act, 2009.
The Directorate of Education said that any school not complying with the directions will be prosecuted under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules, 1973 and the Right to Education Act.
District Education Directors have been instructed to ensure compliance and take appropriate action on complaints.
The Directorate of Education has advised the District Education Directors to ensure that no money is demanded from students of these categories for books, uniforms or writing materials.
