Villupuram: Cyclone Fungal has affected several states and Union Territories in South India. The cyclonic storm has had a widespread impact on Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Electricity supply has been stopped in the affected areas since 11 pm on Saturday. Trees have been uprooted in many places due to strong winds and heavy rains. The people of Puducherry say that they have not seen such rain in the last 30 years.
Rain water seeped into everything from houses to markets. People are imprisoned in their homes. The seriousness of the situation can be gauged from the fact that army personnel had to take boats on the roads to save people’s lives. On the other hand, sudden rain has wreaked havoc in Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister MK Stalin has described it as unusual. NDRF and SDRF teams have been sent to the spot for relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Cyclone Fanjal hit the coast of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu late on 30 November. Since then, the affected areas have been experiencing heavy rains along with strong winds. Cyclone Fungi caused up to 46 cm of rain in Puducherry. Due to this, normal life was completely disrupted. The rainwater entered the house. Due to strong wind, trees were uprooted in places.
Power supply has been suspended in Puducherry since late night. It has become difficult for people to get out due to water entering the houses. The streets have also been flooded, due to which everything from bikes to cars has been submerged. Markets were also closed due to bad weather.
