Coaching New Guidelines: The government has issued new guidelines for coaching centers. The central government has issued new guidelines to ban misleading advertisements like 100 percent selection or job security by coaching institutes. According to the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), coaching centers can no longer make false claims that may mislead consumers.
Action on Consumer Complaints
The CCPA has formulated these guidelines following several complaints received on the National Consumer Helpline. So far 54 notices have been issued to coaching institutes and a fine of around Rs 54.60 lakh has been imposed.
Transparency must for coaching institutes
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare clarified that the government’s aim is not against coaching centres, but to ensure transparency so that consumer rights can be protected. As per the new guidelines, coaching centers will have to submit details like course duration, fee policy, faculty credentials and selection rate properly.
Ban on making false claims of success
Coaching centers cannot now use names, photographs or testimonials of successful students without prior consent. In addition, they must display the disclaimer in the advertisements. The new guidelines apply only to academic support, education, guidance and tutoring services, while counselling, sports and creative activities will not be affected.
Emphasis on ensuring curriculum validity
The CCPA has directed that coaching centers have to provide accurate information about their courses and also clarify whether their course content is accredited or not.
Stiff Penalty Provision for Violation
The new guidelines are a provision of punishment under the Consumer Protection Act.
