The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on Friday said that the field offices of Central GST (CGST) will remain open from March 29 to March 31.
The CBIC’s directive comes days after the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a similar directive in respect of Income Tax Department offices to facilitate completion of pending departmental work. The current financial year 2024-25 ends on March 31. Income Tax and CGST offices across the country will remain open despite the weekend and Eid-ul-Fitr, which may fall on Monday, PTI reported.
Shall be treated as a working day
According to the news, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs in its instructions to the Chief Commissioners said that all the regional offices of CGST will remain open on March 29, March 30 and March 31, 2025 and these will be considered as working days. March 31, 2025 is the last day of the current financial year, so all government payments and settlements related to the financial year have to be completed by that day. March 31 is also the last date for filing updated ITR for 2023-24.
Income Tax Department offices will also remain open
A day earlier, the CBDT said in its order that Income Tax Department offices across the country will remain open from March 29 to 31 to facilitate taxpayers in settling pending tax related work for the current financial year 2024-25. Income Tax Department offices across the country will remain open despite the weekend and Eid-ul-Fitr falling on Monday. The last day of the current financial year is March 31, 2025. Therefore, all government payments and settlements related to this financial year have to be completed by the same day. The last date for filing updated income tax returns for 2023-24 is also March 31.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also issued instructions to banks dealing with government business to remain open on March 31 for the convenience of taxpayers. RBI said that necessary arrangements have also been made to conduct special clearing operations across the country to facilitate accounting of government receipts and payments in the current financial year itself.
