What is Fixed Medical Allowance (FMA)?

It is an initiative of the retired Central Government pensioners to facilitate their outpatient treatment. Medical It is a monthly allowance given to cover expenses.

Eligibility for FMA?

  • Retired central government employees covered under NPS can avail FMA.
  • They should be eligible for the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) but should reside outside the areas covered under it.
  • They should not avail any CGHS facility either.
  • Employees in other government sectors or states may have different policies.

FMA Payments

The FMA rate for NPS retirees has been fixed at Rs 1,000 per month, the same as for those covered under the old pension scheme. However, the FMA will be paid on a quarterly basis directly into the pensioner’s bank account. It has also been clarified that the FMA for September to November will be disbursed in the first week of December.

Life Certificate

To continue receiving FMA from December, retirees will have to submit a life certificate. The life certificate is to ensure that the pensioner is alive and eligible for benefits.

What is a life certificate?

Life Certificate is a document which is proof that the pensioner is alive.
