In a major setback, the Canadian government has announced that from 2025, those applying for permanent residence (PR) under Express Entry will not get the benefit of additional 50 to 200 points on job offers. This change has been made to prevent fraud in the system.

This will be a big blow to the youth of Punjabi origin, who have applied for PR by placing job offers. The Canadian Immigration Department said that this step will apply to those candidates who are planning to get PR through Express Entry.

Impact on Indian candidates

Experts described the move as effective in preventing fraud, but also said that it could harm applicants with genuine skills and their employers. They suggested that the government should adopt a better screening process, rather than eliminating the numbers of those with direct job offers. Currently, there are about 1 lakh 35 thousand PR applications with job offers attached. Currently

, Express Entry candidates with a valid job offer can get an additional 50 or 200 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. These additional points can easily make the difference between a candidate receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence or not being invited at all. The Immigration Department further clarified that removing additional points for a valid job offer is a temporary measure, but at this time it has not said when it will end.

Who will be affected by this?

Once the broad ranking system points for job offers are removed, it will apply to all new and existing candidates in the Express Entry pool, including those already “temporarily working” in Canada. Visa expert Parvinder Montu, who lives in Edminton, Canada, says the Canadian immigration department did not differentiate between job offers in different sectors of the economy, instead mentioning that once the change takes effect it will apply to all candidates with job offers.
